In short: Formed in 1984 by brothers Max and Igor Cavalera, Sepultura evolved from a scrappy Belo Horizonte cover band into a defining force of global heavy metal. Despite losing all original members by 2006, the band maintained its legacy through relentless reinvention, spanning thrash, groove, and industrial sounds across fifteen studio albums.

The band's name, Portuguese for grave, was inspired by Max Cavalera translating Motörhead lyrics. Following the death of their father, a diplomat, the brothers channeled their grief into music, eventually signing with Cogumelo Records in 1985. Their early sound, captured on Morbid Visions, was raw and aggressive, but the 1987 arrival of guitarist Andreas Kisser shifted their trajectory toward the technical precision of thrash metal.

International success arrived with 1989's Beneath the Remains, a record that bridged the gap between death and thrash metal. By the early 1990s, albums like Arise and the groove-heavy Chaos A.D. solidified their status as heavy metal titans. Their 1996 masterpiece, Roots, further expanded their sonic palette by incorporating indigenous Brazilian music, a move that anticipated the nu metal movement and cemented their reputation as one of the most distinctive bands of the decade.

The band's history is marked by significant internal turbulence. Max Cavalera departed in 1996 following a bitter dispute over management, and his brother Igor followed in 2006. These exits left the group without any original members, yet they continued to record and tour, integrating new vocalists like Derrick Green. In 2024, the band announced a two-year farewell tour, marking the end of a forty-two-year career that saw them sell nearly 20 million records worldwide.

Today, Sepultura remains a subject of intense debate among purists and fans, particularly regarding the absence of the Cavalera brothers. While the band's lineup has shifted drastically, their influence on the global metal scene remains undisputed. From their humble beginnings in Brazil to headlining major festivals like Rock in Rio, their journey reflects the volatile, transformative nature of heavy metal itself.
