A bathroom demand sparked the first harmony of a musical dynasty
In short: Before they were global stars or reality TV icons, the Braxtons were just siblings in a Maryland home. Their journey into professional harmony didn't start in a studio, but with a five-year-old's demand for toilet paper that turned into a family's first songwriting experience.
The Braxtons—comprising Toni, Traci, Towanda, Trina, and Tamar—began their musical journey in Severn, Maryland. Their first collaborative moment occurred when five-year-old Tamar demanded toilet paper, prompting the siblings and their brother Michael to sing the 'Toilet Paper Song.' This domestic incident served as their first experience with songwriting and group harmony. They further honed their craft singing in church choirs and touring the East Coast with their religious parents, Rev. Michael Braxton Sr. and Evelyn Braxton.
The group's professional trajectory was marked by significant hurdles. The quintet's 1990 initial release, 'Good Life,' lacked commercial momentum, reaching a maximum of No. 79 within the Billboard Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Singles ranking. The label, Arista Records, dropped them due to marketing difficulties regarding the sisters' age differences. However, this failure paved the way for Toni Braxton's solo career in 1991, while the remaining sisters served as her backup singers for tours and music videos.
The group eventually signed with Atlantic Records in 1992, though they didn't release a full album until 1996. The group's only full-length record, 'So Many Ways,' hit a peak of No. 26 within the Billboard R&B/Hip-Hop Albums rankings. The group's history is punctuated by internal shifts: Traci was unable to sign with Atlantic in 1995 due to pregnancy, and Tamar eventually departed in 1999 to pursue a solo career. Despite these fractures, the quintet reunited in 2011 for the reality series 'Braxton Family Values' and released 'Braxton Family Christmas' in 2015.
The 2015 holiday album saw the group reach significant milestones, including a No. 1 spot on the US Heatseekers Albums chart and a No. 10 position on the US R&B Chart. While the group has faced various lineup changes and personal tensions—including a 2004 revelation about Traci's contract status—they continue to navigate the balance between individual solo success and their collective identity as a musical family.
