Toni Braxton transformed from a church choir singer into a global R&B superstar.
In short: Discovered while pumping gas, Toni Braxton rose to fame with a distinctive contralto voice that bridged R&B and adult contemporary music. Despite industry disputes, health challenges, and bankruptcy, she secured numerous Grammy Awards and became the first Black woman to lead a Disney musical on Broadway as Belle.
Born in 1967 in Maryland, Braxton grew up in a strict religious household where she honed her vocal skills in the church choir. Her professional path began after a chance encounter at an Annapolis service station, where she was spotted by a producer who recognized her from local performances. This led to her early work with her sisters in The Braxtons and eventually a solo deal with LaFace Records.
Braxton's debut album in 1993 was a massive success, selling 10 million copies worldwide and earning her three Grammy Awards, including Best New Artist. Her follow-up, 1996's Secrets, achieved even greater heights, selling over 15 million copies globally and featuring the iconic hit "Un-Break My Heart." Despite this commercial dominance, Braxton faced significant personal and professional hurdles, including contractual disputes, bankruptcy, and a diagnosis of lupus, which she has navigated throughout her later career.
Beyond her music, Braxton has maintained a diverse career in television and theater. She made history on Broadway, becoming the first Black woman to star as Belle in Beauty and the Beast, and later appeared in Aida. Her reality series, Braxton Family Values, provided a window into her personal life, while her later albums, such as 2014's Love, Marriage & Divorce, proved her enduring relevance in the industry. In 2023, Rolling Stone recognized her legacy by ranking her among the 200 greatest singers of all time.
