In short: Des'ree rose from a self-made demo tape to international stardom in the 1990s. With a distinctive contralto voice, she defined a generation of pop through hits like You Gotta Be and the Romeo + Juliet ballad Kissing You, eventually navigating music industry legal battles and a long hiatus to reclaim her artistry.

Born Desirée Annette Weekes in 1968, the British artist grew up immersed in reggae, calypso, and jazz. Despite her parents' hopes that she would pursue law, she entered the music industry in 1991 at age 22 with no prior connections. Her debut single, Feel So High, initially struggled to chart but found success upon its 1992 re-release. By 1994, her single You Gotta Be became a massive cultural touchstone, peaking at number 5 on the Billboard Hot 100 and remaining on the airplay charts for nineteen months.

Des'ree's career was marked by significant cinematic contributions, most notably the 1996 ballad Kissing You, which underscored the iconic meeting of Leonardo DiCaprio and Claire Danes in Romeo + Juliet. Her second album, I Ain't Movin', sold over 2.5 million copies worldwide. However, her path was not without conflict; she successfully sued Janet Jackson for failing to credit her on the song Got 'til It's Gone and later challenged Beyoncé over an unauthorized cover of Kissing You, a case that led to the temporary withdrawal of the album B'Day from sale.

Following the release of her 2003 album Dream Soldier, Des'ree stepped away from the spotlight to study nutrition and naturopathy. Her return to music was deliberate and independent; in 2019, she released A Love Story on her own label, Stargazer Records. Throughout her career, she has balanced commercial success with unconventional milestones, including performing for Pope John Paul II in 1993 and leading 600,000 schoolchildren in a world-record-breaking performance of You Gotta Be in 2008. Her journey reflects a rare trajectory of artistic autonomy, from the constraints of major labels to the creative freedom of her own production.
