In short: We often think of 'Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star' as a primal folk song, but it is actually a structured literary work. The lyrics were first penned by Jane Taylor in the early 19th century and only later paired with the French melody that defined their global reach.

The words we sing today originated from an 1806 collection titled Rhymes for the Nursery, authored by Jane Taylor and her sister Ann. The specific poem was originally titled 'The Star' and consisted of five distinct stanzas written in couplet form. While most people only recognize the first stanza as a lullaby, the full poetic structure includes additional verses that have largely faded from common memory.

The music provides an even deeper layer of history. The melody is not English but French, titled 'Ah! vous dirai-je, maman.' First published in 1761, it was later arranged by various composers, most notably Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, who created twelve variations on the theme. It wasn't until 1838 that the Taylor lyrics were formally paired with this French tune in The Singing Master: First Class Tune Book.

The song's cultural footprint is vast and varied. Beyond its role as a nursery rhyme, the melody serves as the foundation for several other staples of early childhood education, including the ABC Song and 'Baa, Baa, Black Sheep.' Interestingly, the opening lines have even appeared in darker contexts, such as the traditional murder ballad 'Duncan and Brady,' and were famously parodied by the Mad Hatter in Lewis Carroll's Alice's Adventures in Wonderland.

The origins of Jane Taylor’s inspiration remain a point of local contention. While both Colchester and Chipping Ongar claim her as their own, her sister Ann noted that Jane did not actually see the village of Ongar until 1810—four years after the poem was already published.
