In short: Founded in 1907 to teach farming and mechanics, the University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa evolved into a premier research institution. Today, it stands as one of the few universities globally to hold land, sea, space, and sun-grant status, while serving as a critical hub for United States defense research.

The university began as a modest institution focused on agricultural and mechanical training, established by the Territorial Legislature in 1907. Its early development was heavily influenced by Cornell University, which provided both academic guidance and its first president, John W. Gilmore. By 1912, the school relocated to its current site in Mānoa Valley, eventually gaining university status in 1919. This expansion continued through the 20th century, absorbing the Territorial Normal School in 1931 and growing its campus footprint from a few acres to over 400.

The institution’s trajectory shifted dramatically during World War II. Following the 1941 attack on Pearl Harbor, the campus was repurposed for military use, with the Corps of Engineers occupying buildings and the ROTC program moving to active duty. This period saw a significant exodus of students and faculty, leaving those who remained to navigate a campus defined by bomb shelters and gas masks. Post-war growth was rapid, eventually leading to the 1965 creation of a broader university system that integrated community colleges and expanded the institution's research mission.

Today, the flagship campus is a major center for high-level research. It is one of only fourteen University Affiliated Research Centers for the Department of Defense and maintains one of the largest academic libraries in the United States, housing 3.4 million volumes. The university’s governance has also evolved to mirror major research institutions, moving from a system of chancellors to a modern structure where a provost manages daily academic and operational affairs. This governance model supports a diverse array of 17 schools and colleges, ranging from the Shidler College of Business to the newly renamed College of Tropical Agriculture and Human Resilience.
