Van Halen's Balance album captured a band at the peak of internal creative tension.
In short: Released in 1995, Balance was the final studio album featuring Sammy Hagar and bassist Michael Anthony. Amidst internal fighting and Eddie Van Halen's newfound sobriety, the band produced a record that reached number one on the Billboard 200, despite critics remaining deeply divided over its serious, experimental tone.
Balance, released on January 24, 1995, marked a significant shift in Van Halen's trajectory. Recorded largely at Eddie Van Halen's 5150 Studios, the album was produced by Bruce Fairbairn and emerged during a period of intense internal conflict between Hagar and the Van Halen brothers. This tension was compounded by the death of the band's longtime manager, Ed Leffler, in 1993. Despite the discord, the album debuted at number one on the Billboard 200 with 295,000 units sold in its first week, proving the band's commercial resilience.
The album is noted for its serious, sometimes mystical tone, a departure from the band's earlier, more lighthearted work. Eddie Van Halen, who had recently quit drinking, integrated his keyboard and guitar work more fully than on previous records. The opening track, 'The Seventh Seal', features chanting from the monks of Gyuto Tantric University, while other tracks like 'Not Enough' showcase piano-driven ballads. The cover art, depicting conjoined twins on a seesaw, was designed to reflect the duality of the human psyche and the band's own internal turmoil.
Critical reception was polarized. While some reviewers praised the production and Eddie's technical evolution, others dismissed the album as pretentious or lacking the band's signature energy. Retrospective assessments often highlight the album as a sign of a fracturing lineup, with some critics suggesting the band was 'running on fumes' by the time of its release. Nevertheless, the album achieved triple platinum status by 2004, selling over three million copies in the United States, and remains a complex artifact of a pivotal era in the band's history.
