In short: Yang Hyun-suk transformed from a 1990s dance icon into the architect of YG Entertainment, one of South Korea’s most influential music labels. While his company launched global sensations like Blackpink and Psy, his career has been defined by both massive cultural impact and significant legal turmoil that continues to unfold.

Born in 1970, Yang Hyun-suk began his career as a dancer, performing with early Korean breaking crews like Spark. His rise to national prominence occurred in 1991 when he joined Seo Taiji and Boys, a group that fundamentally altered the Korean music landscape. Their influence extended beyond music; their 1996 song 'Shidaeyugam' sparked a public backlash that eventually led to the abolition of the country's pre-censorship laws. Following the group's dissolution in 1996, Yang transitioned into production, founding YG Entertainment.

As an executive, Yang cultivated a roster of highly successful acts, including Big Bang, 2NE1, and Psy. His production style is characterized by a hands-on approach, a trait he maintains to this day. In late 2023, he noted his deep involvement in the production of the group BabyMonster, stating that the members' youth resonated with him personally, as he has a daughter of a similar age. This commitment to the company's output remains a central pillar of his professional identity.

However, Yang's career has faced severe challenges. In 2019, amidst the Burning Sun scandal and various allegations, he stepped down from his positions at YG Entertainment. His legal troubles persisted, culminating in a 2023 ruling by the Seoul High Court. The court found that Yang had abused his corporate influence to coerce trainees into changing police testimonies. He was sentenced to six months in prison, suspended for one year. Despite these controversies, Yang has continued to appear in official company communications, including a May 2024 video outlining future plans for his artists.
