From Route 66 to the Hall of Fame
In short: Wynonna Judd's stage name wasn't a birthright; it was inspired by a roadside town in a classic song. From her early days as a mother-daughter duo to her solo multi-platinum success, her career is a study in musical evolution, resilience, and the complexities of family legacy.
Wynonna chose her famous moniker following the track "(Get Your Kicks on) Route 66," referencing Winona, Arizona, after being born Christina Claire Ciminella during 1964. She began her musical journey in Nashville in 1979, first finding massive success as half of the duo The Judds. Between 1983 and 1991, the duo became the biggest-selling act in country music, selling over 20 million records and winning over 60 industry awards before Naomi Judd retired due to chronic hepatitis C.
Wynonna launched her solo career in 1992, immediately achieving 5× Multi-Platinum status with her self-titled debut. While her early solo work leaned toward country-pop, she pivoted in 1997 with 'The Other Side,' an album intentionally focused on blues and rock sounds. Despite facing negative publicity in the mid-90s, she maintained her status as a powerhouse, eventually releasing her first co-produced album, 'New Day Dawning,' in 1999, which featured a bonus disc of new material with her mother.
The narrative of her career is deeply intertwined with her family. After a 1999 reunion and a 2010 tour, she was inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame in 2022 as part of The Judds. This induction occurred just one day after her mother, Naomi, passed away in April 2022. Wynonna has since honored her mother's legacy through a 2022 tribute tour and a 2023 documentary, while continuing to evolve as a songwriter and advocate.
