From underground rapper to global cultural envoy and chart-topping producer
In short: Before he was a global superstar, Min Yoon-gi was an underground artist known as Gloss. Today, the man known as Suga is not just a member of BTS, but a prolific composer with over 160 credits, a diplomat for Korean culture, and a pioneer of the solo K-pop movement.
Min Yoon-gi’s musical journey began in the underground hip-hop scene of Daegu, South Korea. Inspired by the reggae-hip hop sounds of Stony Skunk and the group Epik High, he began writing lyrics and studying MIDI by age 13. By 17, he was working in a record studio, eventually transitioning from his underground alias, Gloss, to a producer role at Big Hit Entertainment.
His solo career, often performed under the name Agust D, has achieved unprecedented commercial success. His 2020 mixtape, D-2, reached number seven on the UK Albums Chart and number 11 on the US Billboard 200. In 2023, his debut solo album, D-Day, tied him with his bandmate Jimin for the highest-charting South Korean solo artist in US history, debuting at number two on the Billboard 200.
Beyond the charts, Suga’s influence extends into diplomacy and philanthropy. In 2021, he was named a Special Presidential Envoy for Future Generations and Culture by the South Korean President. His philanthropic efforts are equally significant; he has donated hundreds of millions of won to various causes, including disaster relief and pediatric cancer foundations. Most recently, in 2025, he donated ₩5 billion to establish the Min Yoongi Center at Severance Hospital, a facility dedicated to treating children with autism, where he also serves as a volunteer music instructor.
Despite his global fame, his career has faced significant personal and legal hurdles. He has navigated surgeries for appendicitis and shoulder injuries, as well as the pressures of fame explored in his music. In 2024, he faced legal scrutiny following an electric scooter incident in Seoul, resulting in a fine of ₩15 million.
