In short: In 1942, the US Army needed an experimental airborne force. They bypassed traditional National Guard units, which faced political and financial resistance to such radical changes, and selected the 82nd Infantry Division. This decision transformed a standard infantry unit into the first airborne division in American military history.

The 82nd Division was originally constituted on August 5, 1917, as an infantry division for World War I. Its nickname, All-American, was adopted because its initial members were drawn from all 48 states. After the war, the division was demobilized in 1919, only to be reconstituted in 1921 as part of the Organized Reserves. During the interwar years, the division faced significant challenges, including a lack of consistent personnel and equipment, which prevented it from participating as a cohesive unit in major maneuvers during 1938, 1940, and 1941.

By 1942, the Army sought to create its first airborne division. The selection of the 82nd was deliberate. Unlike National Guard units, which faced resistance from state leaders wary of the high costs associated with airborne facilities, the 82nd was a reserve unit with personnel who had already completed basic training. Furthermore, its location offered favorable weather and flying facilities. On August 15, 1942, under the command of Major General Matthew Ridgway, the unit was officially redesignated as the 82nd Airborne Division at Fort Bragg, North Carolina.

The transition required significant structural changes. The division moved from a traditional infantry organization to an experimental airborne model, eventually incorporating parachute infantry regiments like the 504th and 505th. This evolution culminated in the division's first combat parachute assault during the invasion of Sicily on July 9, 1943. This operation, led by Colonel James M. Gavin, marked the first regimental-sized combat parachute assault in United States Army history, proving the viability of the airborne concept that traditionalists had initially doubted.
