How a diverse collection of state units became the "Rainbow Division"
In short: During the rapid mobilization for World War I, the United States needed a fast way to build its army. By combining 27 different National Guard units from across the country, the military created a unique, multi-state force that earned a colorful nickname and a legendary legacy.
The 42nd Infantry Division, famously known as the "Rainbow Division," was born from a strategic proposal by then-Major Douglas MacArthur. He suggested to Major General William Abram Mann that the military should form a division using units from various states that had not yet been assigned to other divisions. Secretary of War Newton D. Baker endorsed the concept, remarking that this entity would "stretch over the whole country like a rainbow."
Official orders for the division's creation arrived on 1 August 1917, bringing together units from the District of Columbia and 26 states. This composite structure was assembled at Camp Mills, New York, in August 1917. By November 1917, the 42nd was among the first divisions of the American Expeditionary Forces to arrive on the Western Front in Belgium and France.
The division endured 164 days of combat during World War I, participating in four primary operations: the Aisne-Marne, Champagne-Marne, Meuse-Argonne Offensive, and the Battle of Saint-Mihiel. During these engagements, the division suffered 14,683 total casualties, including 2,810 killed in action or died of wounds and 11,873 wounded in action.
The division's distinctive shoulder patch also carries a layered history. While official history credits Colonel William N. Hughes Jr. with modifying the design from a half-arc to a quarter-arc to achieve standardization, veterans suggest a more somber reason. They claim soldiers reduced the symbol to a quarter-arc to memorialize the half of the division's soldiers who were killed or wounded during the war.
