Africa's Most Iconic Animals: Leopard, Zebra & Buffalo · 23:07 · Video: Free High-Quality Documentaries · Watch at the source

In short: Leopards are masters of a specific kind of survival: solitude. Unlike the social lions that rule the plains, leopards rely on stealth and sheer physical power to secure their meals. They possess the unique ability to drag prey twice their own weight into the trees to avoid competition.

The leopard is often described as the most elusive member of Africa's 'Big Five,' a group of megafauna coined in the late 1800s during the colonial period. Originally, the term referred to the animals trophy hunters considered most dangerous and challenging to hunt on foot. While they are iconic sights for modern safari-goers, these species face significant threats; for example, lions have lost approximately 94 percent of their original habitat, leaving only about 20,000 in the wild.

Leopards utilize a specialized hunting strategy centered on camouflage and isolation. Their distinctive dark spots, known as rosettes, allow them to blend into the shadows of the savannah. Because they are solitary hunters, they must protect their kills from other predators—most notably lions. To ensure they can eat in peace, leopards use their immense strength to haul large prey, such as antelope or zebra, high into tree branches where larger carnivores cannot reach.

In contrast to the leopard's solitary life, the African buffalo and zebra rely on collective defense and speed. Buffalo are hefty, cow-like animals that can congregate by the thousands in areas like the Serengeti; this massive unity serves as a primary defense against predators. Zebras, meanwhile, roam in tight-knit herds across the Maasai Mara and Serengeti, utilizing their ability to outrun lions at speeds of up to 64 km/h. Together, these animals represent two different evolutionary paths: the mastery of stealth versus the power of the pack.
