How a simple clerical error renamed a multi-million dollar helicopter fleet
In short: In the high-stakes world of aerospace engineering, precision is everything. Yet, the heavy-lift AW101 began its life under a name born from a mere transcription error. Beyond the typo lies a complex history of international joint ventures, political battles, and advanced technology designed to master the most extreme environments on Earth.
The AgustaWestland AW101, known to many as the Merlin, originated from a 1977 UK Ministry of Defence requirement to replace aging Westland Sea Kings. The project was a massive collaborative effort between Westland Helicopters in the UK and Agusta in Italy. Interestingly, the aircraft's original designation, EHI 01, reflected the 'European Helicopter Industries' joint venture, but a transcription error permanently altered the name to EH101. Following a merger in 2000, the aircraft eventually adopted its current AW101 designation in 2007.
The aircraft's development was marked by significant political and technical turbulence. In Canada, the procurement of the EH101 sparked a fierce political battle between the Conservative and Liberal parties, eventually leading to a 1993 cancellation that cost the government $470 million. Technically, the aircraft has seen evolution in its propulsion; while early prototypes used General Electric CT7-2A engines, the Rolls-Royce Turbomeca RTM322 became a staple, powering approximately 80% of the fleet. The design also incorporates advanced materials, such as an aluminium–lithium alloy fuselage and carbon/glass rotor blades with titanium edges.
Today, the AW101 is a versatile workhorse capable of operating in temperatures from −45 to +50 °C and maintaining a stable hover in 74 km/h crosswinds. Its roles range from anti-submarine warfare and search and rescue to VIP transport and even potential use as a heavyweight unmanned aerial vehicle. While it has faced challenges, such as a 2004 grounding of Royal Navy Merlins due to a tail rotor defect, it remains a cornerstone of maritime and military utility operations worldwide.
