The American pickerel is a modest predator hiding in North America's quiet, vegetated waters.
In short: Often overshadowed by their larger, more aggressive cousins like the northern pike, American pickerels are small but voracious freshwater predators. Comprising two distinct subspecies, these fish thrive in sluggish pools and wetlands, relying on stealth and camouflage to hunt smaller fish rather than brute size or strength.
The American pickerel, known scientifically as Esox americanus, belongs to the Esocidae family. It is split into two primary subspecies: the redfin pickerel, classified by Gmelin in 1789, and the grass pickerel, which Lesueur originally named E. vermiculatus in 1846 before it was reclassified. While they share a similar predatory nature, they are physically distinct; the redfin is noted for its namesake orange-red fins, whereas the grass pickerel displays amber or dusky fins with dark leading edges.
These fish are masters of concealment, preferring the slow-moving, plant-rich environments of lakes and marshes. Their reproductive strategy is hands-off: they scatter sticky, spherical eggs in shallow, dense vegetation and provide no parental care. Once hatched, the young grow in these protected zones, though they remain vulnerable to larger predators like striped bass or bowfin if they wander into deeper rivers or estuaries. They are significantly smaller than the chain pickerel, typically reaching maximum lengths of about 13 inches and weights near 2 pounds.
While they lack the prestige of trophy game fish like the muskellunge, anglers often find them a sporty challenge when using ultralight tackle. Their geographic distribution across North America is broad but separated by preference; the redfin pickerel occupies a range stretching from the Saint Lawrence region down to the Gulf Coast, while the grass pickerel is found further west, from the Great Lakes area down to the western Gulf Coast. Despite their voracious appetite, they remain a subtle, often overlooked component of the continent's freshwater ecosystems.
