Could rogue planes have mimicked real flight paths to execute a complex 9/11 plan?
In short: On September 11, 2001, four hijacked airliners were used in a meticulously planned terrorist attack. While the official record details the destruction of the Twin Towers and the Pentagon, one theory explores a much more intricate possibility: that planes carrying explosives could have assumed the exact flight paths of real commercial flights.
The terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001, remain the deadliest in American history, resulting in the deaths of 2,976 people. The coordinated assault involved the hijacking of four aircraft. At 8:46 a.m., American Airlines Flight 11 struck the North Tower of the World Trade Center, tearing a hole from the 93rd to the 99th floors. Seventeen minutes later, at 9:03 a.m., United Airlines Flight 175 hit the South Tower between the 77th and 85th floors. The third plane, American Airlines Flight 77, struck the Pentagon in Arlington, Virginia, approximately half an hour after the second tower was hit.
In the wake of the devastation, the FBI launched its largest investigation ever, code-named PENTTBOM. This massive operation, which involved more than half a million investigative leads and hundreds of thousands of public tips, aimed to identify the hijackers and their sponsors. At the height of the investigation, more than half of the FBI's agents were dedicated to the case.
Beyond the immediate destruction, the attacks caused profound global shifts in anti-terror operations. The scale of the crime scenes was unprecedented, with the FBI establishing command posts at all three crash sites—the Twin Towers, the Pentagon, and a crash site in rural Pennsylvania—by the end of the day. Even decades later, the impact persists, as many first responders continue to manage adverse health effects resulting from the toxic conditions encountered during the rescue efforts.
