Whales exhibit complex problem-solving, cultural exchange, and playfulness
In short: This documentary explores the sophisticated cognitive lives of whales, moving beyond simple instinct to reveal behaviors like cultural transmission and strategic thinking. Narrated by David Attenborough, it provides a rare look at the social and intellectual depth of these marine giants.
The film documents specific instances of high-level intelligence, such as humpback whales outsmarting humans to secure food and orcas passing down new hunting techniques to their families. It also highlights non-utilitarian behaviors, including sperm whales playing with objects and gray whales surfing waves for enjoyment.
Beyond individual intelligence, the documentary examines whale culture, specifically how whale songs facilitate a form of cultural exchange across the ocean. Filmed using 4K technology and specialized equipment like drones and breath-holding camera crews, the production captures these hidden social bonds and problem-solving skills in detail.
