The complex social architecture of the ocean's largest predators
In short: This documentary follows a specific family of sperm whales off the coast of Mauritius, revealing the intricate social bonds and family dynamics of these oceanic giants.
Captured over nearly a decade using hundreds of hours of 4K footage, the film tracks a clan of over two dozen whales. It highlights individual personalities, such as the shy Arthur, the adventurous Elliot, and the 'prodigal son' Konas, who is welcomed back by dozens of relatives.
The narrative explores how these whales function socially, specifically focusing on the birth of a calf named Lana and the eventual bifurcation of the clan. This process of reordering social ties allows the whales to form new families, ensuring the continuation of their species across the oceans.
