The world's smallest otter uses its hands like a human to hunt for food
In short: Weighing a maximum of 3.5 kilograms, the Asian small-clawed otter is the smallest of its kind. Unlike other otters that rely on their mouths, these agile swimmers use their highly sensitive, partially webbed forepaws to forage for crabs and mollusks in murky water, displaying remarkable manual dexterity and intelligence.
Native to South and Southeast Asia, the Asian small-clawed otter (Lutra cinerea) is a master of its riverine and mangrove habitats. Its physical design is specialized for this lifestyle: it possesses short, blunt claws that do not extend past its digital pads, and its paws feature incomplete webbing, granting it the fine motor control needed to probe under rocks and dig through mud for prey. When faced with stubborn shellfish, these otters have been observed leaving their catch in the sun, allowing heat to force the shells open, or simply crushing them with their robust teeth.
These otters are highly social, living in groups of up to 15 individuals that communicate through a complex repertoire of at least 12 distinct calls. Their social structure is reinforced by behaviors like spraint smearing, where they use their hind feet and tails to mark territory and strengthen group bonds. Despite their adaptability, they face significant threats from habitat loss, pollution, and the illegal pet trade, which has seen hundreds of individuals confiscated across Asia in recent years.
Taxonomically, the species has a complex history, with researchers debating its classification within the genera Amblonyx and Aonyx for over a century. Genetic studies suggest they diverged from their closest relatives about 1.5 million years ago. Today, they are listed as Vulnerable on the IUCN Red List, and their protection was bolstered in 2019 when they were moved to CITES Appendix I, strictly regulating international trade to prevent further population decline.
