How a Malian Colonel Seized Power Twice and Reshaped the Nation's Future
In short: Assimi Goïta, a career military officer trained in international academies, transformed from a special forces commander into Mali's dominant political figure. Through two coups and a series of strategic alliances, he has dismantled traditional political structures, pivoted toward Russia, and consolidated state control over the country's vital mining sector.
Born in 1983, Assimi Goïta rose through the ranks of the Malian Armed Forces, graduating from the Joint Military School in 2002. As a colonel in the Autonomous Special Forces Battalion, he gained operational experience in the country's central region during the ongoing jihadist insurgency. His professional trajectory included advanced training in Germany, France, Gabon, and the United States, where he worked alongside U.S. Army Special Forces.
Goïta's ascent to power began in August 2020, when he led the National Committee for the Salvation of the People to overthrow President Ibrahim Boubacar Keïta. Although he initially accepted an interim vice presidency under Bah Ndaw, Goïta seized full control in May 2021, citing government interference in military appointments. Since then, he has systematically centralized authority, including the 2025 dissolution of all political parties and the indefinite postponement of elections. In July 2025, the National Transitional Council granted him a five-year term, renewable indefinitely without democratic oversight.
Under his leadership, Mali has undergone a radical geopolitical shift. Goïta cut military ties with France and established a close partnership with Russia and the Wagner Group, frequently consulting with Vladimir Putin on security and trade. Domestically, his administration has pursued a policy of nationalization, increasing the state's stake in mining projects from 20% to 35% and taking full control of the Morila and Yatela mines. Following a 2026 assassination attempt involving a car bomb at his residence, Goïta appointed himself defense minister, further tightening his grip on the state apparatus.
