In short: Beaked whales are among the least understood mammals on Earth, spending their lives in the deep ocean. These reclusive creatures possess unique anatomical quirks, including complex, multi-compartment stomachs and tusks that sometimes grow so large they restrict the animal's ability to feed. They remain one of science's most persistent puzzles.

Belonging to the family Ziphiidae, beaked whales are a diverse group of over 20 species that diverged from the toothed whale lineage roughly 15 to 20 million years ago. Despite their size—ranging from the 3.7-meter dwarf beaked whale to the 13-meter giant bottlenose whale—they are rarely seen. This is partly because their blowholes are structured to direct their breath forward rather than upward, making them difficult to spot at the surface. They are master divers, preferring squid as their primary prey, and possess a highly specialized digestive system featuring up to 14 stomach compartments.

The most striking feature of these whales is their dentition. In almost all species, functional teeth are limited to one or two pairs in the lower jaw, which typically only erupt in males. These teeth are often used as weapons in intraspecific combat, leaving males heavily scarred. In some species, such as the strap-toothed whale, these tusks curve upward, effectively locking the jaw and limiting the animal's gape. Researchers believe these teeth function as secondary sexual characteristics, similar to deer antlers, with females potentially selecting mates based on their unique shapes.

Taxonomy remains a point of contention. While the family is widely known as Ziphiidae, some authorities argue that Hyperoodontidae holds priority due to earlier usage. Furthermore, the family is still growing; new species continue to be identified through genetic analysis of stranded specimens or skeletal remains. Because they inhabit deep-sea environments and exhibit reclusive behavior, much of their natural history remains speculative, with some species known only from a handful of bones or recent, rare sightings.
