Moving beyond plant parts to master the logic of families

Becoming 'familiar' with botany - exploring five plant families: Webinar Recording · 53:40 · Video: NPMS Support · Watch at the source

In short: Knowing the anatomy of a plant is only the beginning. This webinar explores how to identify wildflowers by recognizing the shared characteristics of five major plant families.

Led by botanist Sarah Shuttleworth, who has over 15 years of field surveying experience, the session moves from basic plant parts to family-level identification. Five prevalent botanical groups—Rubiaceae (Bedstraw family), Rosaceae (Rose family), Fabaceae (Pea family), Lamiaceae (Dead-nettle family), and Apiaceae (Carrot family)—are examined during this online session.

By learning these groupings, observers can more effectively navigate the natural world and identify diverse species based on evolutionary commonalities.
