In short: Opened in 1958 with one small building, Beijing Capital International Airport evolved into a massive transit nexus. By 2013, it handled over 83 million passengers annually. Its expansion, particularly the colossal Terminal 3, integrated traditional Chinese aesthetics with modern engineering to accommodate the 2008 Summer Olympics and beyond.

The airport began as a modest facility with a single 2,500-meter runway. Over decades, it underwent several expansions to meet surging demand. A major turning point occurred in 2007 and 2008, when the airport added a third runway and the sprawling Terminal 3. This massive project, which cost 3.5 billion US dollars, was supported by significant international financing, including a 500-million-euro loan from the European Investment Bank and a 30-billion-yen loan from Japan.

Terminal 3 was designed by a consortium including Foster + Partners and Arup, aiming to blend functionality with cultural heritage. The terminal features imperial-style indoor gardens and decorative elements like copper fire-fighting vats reminiscent of the Forbidden City. Its roof, colored red to signify good luck, utilizes triangular windows to optimize natural light. At its 2008 opening, it stood as the world's largest passenger terminal by floor area, though it later ceded that title to Dubai International Airport.

The facility manages complex logistics across three terminals, connected by shuttle buses and a dedicated rail link. Terminal 3 alone utilizes an automated people mover to shuttle travelers between its sub-concourses. Despite its scale, the airport faced capacity constraints, leading to the development of Beijing Daxing International Airport. Today, the airport remains a critical piece of infrastructure, having earned various accolades from the Airports Council International for its service quality and passenger satisfaction.
