Can a starfish-shaped terminal redefine the future of global air travel in Beijing?
In short: Beijing Daxing International Airport is a massive engineering marvel designed to handle millions of passengers annually. Nicknamed the starfish for its unique terminal layout, this facility integrates high-speed rail and cutting-edge technology to streamline transit. It represents a bold shift in how major cities manage the complexities of modern aviation.
Completed in June 2019, Beijing Daxing International Airport serves as a critical hub for the Beijing, Tianjin, and Hebei region. The terminal, designed by Zaha Hadid Architects, is the world's largest single-building airport terminal, covering 700,000 square meters. Its distinctive starfish shape features a central hub with six curved spokes, intended to optimize passenger flow and integrate diverse retail, dining, and workspace options. The project was a massive financial undertaking, with the airport construction costing 120 billion yuan and peripheral infrastructure bringing the total investment to 450 billion yuan.
The airport's operational philosophy emphasizes connectivity and efficiency. Beneath the terminal lies a sophisticated ground transportation hub that links the facility to high-speed rail, metro lines, and expressways. For instance, the Beijing–Xiong'an intercity railway allows travel from Beijing West railway station to the airport in just 28 minutes. Technological integration is equally central, with the facility utilizing facial recognition for security, radio frequency identification for baggage tracking, and geothermal heat pumps for climate control. It is also the first Chinese airport to feature two control towers and four runways.
Strategic planning dictated the airport's role in the regional aviation landscape. To alleviate pressure on the older Beijing Capital International Airport, the Civil Aviation Administration of China implemented a policy requiring most domestic airlines to operate from only one Beijing-area airport. This led to a significant realignment of alliances, with SkyTeam members largely moving to Daxing. Despite challenges like the COVID-19 pandemic, which delayed some international route expansions, the airport has handled over 1.68 million flights and 237 million passengers as of September 2026. It remains a cornerstone of China's long-term aviation infrastructure goals.
