The prehistoric giant whose eggs are worth more than its life
In short: The Beluga Sturgeon is a living relic from the age of dinosaurs. This documentary explores the paradox of a species pushed to the brink of extinction by the global demand for its most expensive luxury.
Virtually unchanged from their ancestors, Beluga Sturgeons are among the world's largest freshwater fish. Their survival is currently threatened by the exclusive market for their unfertilized eggs, known as caviar, which are served in high-end restaurants as "black gold.",
The documentary examines a strange biological and economic paradox: while the demand for caviar has driven the species to the edge of extinction, the very market that threatens them may provide the only remaining means for their continued existence.
