In short: Known for its distinctive egg-shaped head and triangular eyes, the Bull Terrier is a spirited, fun-loving breed with a history rooted in 19th-century English bloodsports. While often misunderstood due to breed-specific legislation, these dogs are celebrated for their even temperament and deep loyalty to their human companions.

The Bull Terrier emerged in mid-19th century England when James Hinks began crossing bull and terrier breeds with the now-extinct English White Terrier. Originally, these dogs were bred for vermin control and bloodsports, combining the tenacity of the Old English Bulldog with the agility of various terriers. By 1862, Hinks introduced a cleaner, more refined look, eventually leading to the modern breed standard. The iconic 'egg-shaped' head, which lacks a stop in the skull profile, was solidified by 1917 with a dog named Lord Gladiator.

Despite their courageous and fun-loving personality, the breed requires experienced ownership due to a stubborn, independent streak. They are not inherently different in temperament from other popular breeds like Golden Retrievers, according to a 2008 German study, yet they frequently face breed-specific bans. Health remains a significant consideration; white Bull Terriers are particularly prone to deafness and a rare, fatal condition called lethal acrodermatitis. Additionally, the breed shows a high predisposition to neutrophilic cholangitis.

Beyond their physical traits, Bull Terriers have left an indelible mark on culture and history. Famous owners include General George S. Patton, who famously confined his dog Willie for fighting with Eisenhower's terrier, and Theodore Roosevelt, whose dog Pete was known for his aggressive encounters with diplomats. From the loyal Bullseye in Oliver Twist to the mascot Spuds MacKenzie and the animated Sparky in Frankenweenie, the breed’s unique appearance and spirited nature have made them enduring icons in literature, film, and advertising.
