In short: It is Africa's largest snake and one of the world's heaviest, capable of overpowering even crocodiles. While often feared as a man-eater, the Central African rock python is a complex predator with surprising maternal instincts and a deep place in ancient cultural worship.

The Central African rock python (Python seseb) is a massive constrictor native to sub-Saharan Africa. While adults typically measure between 3 and 3.53 meters, unusually large specimens can exceed 4.8 meters, and some reliable reports suggest lengths of up to 6 meters. These snakes are incredibly heavy-set, with weights often ranging from 55 to 65 kg, though exceptional individuals may exceed 91 kg.

Unlike many other snakes, the female demonstrates significant maternal care. After laying between 20 and 100 hard-shelled eggs in burrows or termite mounds, she coils around the nest to protect and potentially incubate them for approximately 90 days. She may even guard the hatchlings for up to two weeks after they emerge, a behavior that is quite unusual among pythons.

Their hunting capabilities are formidable. They kill prey through constriction, a process thought to cause cardiac arrest rather than simple suffocation. While they frequently eat antelopes, monkeys, and even crocodiles, a 2017 film captured a 3.9-meter specimen consuming a 70 kg male spotted hyena. This suggests their ability to tackle dangerous, large-bodied animals is greater than previously understood.

Despite their fearsome reputation, documented fatal attacks on humans are exceptionally rare. However, the species faces significant threats from habitat loss and hunting for leather and bushmeat. In some West African regions, populations have declined by more than 60% over three generations, leading to its status as a Near threatened species.
