The African snake responsible for thousands of bites may not be as deadly as feared
In short: The puff adder is a heavy-bodied predator known for inflating its body and hissing loudly when threatened. While it is blamed for several thousand snakebite deaths in Africa annually, researchers suggest its lethal reputation might be overstated, as its venom is relatively slow-acting.
Found across sub-Saharan Africa and the western and southern coasts of the Arabian Peninsula, the puff adder (Bitis arietans) is a master of camouflage. Its scales range from sandy tan to dark brown, often featuring yellowish U- or V-shaped patterns that blend into desert rocks, sand, and dry grasses. This concealment is supplemented by a form of olfactory crypsis—a chemical ability that may make the snake nearly odorless, making it difficult for scent-based predators like meerkats and trained dogs to detect them.
Physically, the species is stocky and robust. While some large adults can reach 1.5 meters in length, most individuals rarely exceed 1 meter, with weights typically between 4'5 and 6.8 kg. The species is named for its defensive behavior of inflating its body with air to appear larger. Interestingly, this behavior is shared by about 15 of the 18 species in the Bitis genus, including the Gaboon viper.
Despite its reputation as a dangerous pest, the impact of its venom is nuanced. While the puff adder is responsible for more snakebite fatalities in Africa than any other snake, the venom itself rarely causes death. Instead, the venom often causes intense pain, blistering, and tissue damage that can lead to lost limbs. Death is more frequently linked to secondary factors, such as infections at the bite site. When hunting, the snake's physical strike is often powerful enough to kill prey—including rodents, birds, and lizards—before the venom even takes effect.
