In short: The Asian citrus psyllid is a tiny pest smaller than a grain of rice that threatens global citrus crops. To survive, these insects have evolved a sinister strategy: they bribe Argentine ants with ribbons of sugary excrement, known as honeydew, in exchange for protection from natural predators and parasitic wasps.

The Asian citrus psyllid, or Diaphorina citri, is more than just a nuisance; it is a vector for a devastating bacterial infection known as citrus greening, or huánglóngbìng. When these insects feed on the sap of citrus trees, they transmit the bacteria, which causes fruit to become bitter and green. Eventually, the disease leads to the death of the tree, characterized by asymmetric yellow patches on the leaves and a total cessation of fruit production.

Because the psyllids lack their own internal defense systems, they have effectively recruited Argentine ants as mercenaries. The ants are drawn to the honeydew—the sugary, ribbon-like waste produced by the psyllid nymphs. By consuming this delicacy, the ants are incentivized to guard the psyllids against natural enemies, including predators and parasitic wasps introduced from Pakistan. This symbiotic relationship complicates efforts to manage the pest, as the ants actively interfere with biological control measures.

Mark Hoddle, who leads a research laboratory at UC Riverside, notes that an infestation is often identifiable by the presence of white, curly cues of honeydew on the tender young leaves at the tips of branches. To combat the threat to the citrus industry, Hoddle’s team is exploring innovative strategies to disrupt this relationship. Their research involves various methods, including the use of invisible lasers and the deployment of specialized wasps, to bypass the ants' protection and mitigate the damage caused by the psyllids.
