How a tiny nation protects 5% of the world's biodiversity
In short: Costa Rica is a global leader in conservation, managing to protect a massive portion of its land despite its small size. This documentary explores how the country achieved some of the world's highest rates of land protection.
While Costa Rica accounts for only about 0.03% of the world's landmass, it serves as a critical sanctuary containing 5% of the planet's total biodiversity. This density of life is supported by a commitment to preservation: 25% of the country's territory is currently protected within national parks and wildlife reserves.
The nation's success is a result of rapid environmental policy. In just 32 years, Costa Rica managed to slash deforestation rates—which were once among the highest in the world—to nearly zero by the year 2005.
