In short: This bulky, medium-sized raptor defies easy categorization. While it is technically a falcon, it possesses the sharp beak and talons of a hawk, yet spends much of its time walking on the ground like a vulture. It is an adaptable survivor found across the Americas, from Tierra del Fuego to Florida.

The crested caracara is a striking bird, instantly recognizable by its long yellow-orange legs, black cap, and white neck. Despite its hawk-like appearance, it belongs to the falcon family. It is a bulky raptor, measuring between 19.3 and 22.8 inches in length, with a wingspan reaching up to 49.2 inches. Unlike many other raptors, it is equally comfortable on the ground as it is in the air, often joining vultures to scavenge for carrion in open country such as pastures, deserts, and savannas.

The species exhibits a remarkable geographical range, stretching from the southern United States through Mexico and Central America to the southern tip of South America. In the United States, Florida hosts a relict population that has persisted since the end of the last glacial period, roughly 12,500 years ago. While these birds were once connected to populations in Texas via a vast oak savanna, rising temperatures eventually isolated the Florida group, which now nests primarily in cabbage palmettos and southern live oaks.

The bird's identity has been subject to historical debate. Some researchers have proposed that the caracara, rather than the golden eagle, was the bird depicted in the mythical founding of Tenochtitlan, though the golden eagle remains the official national emblem of Mexico. The name 'caracara' is thought to be onomatopoeic, derived from the Old Tupi word 'karakará'. Today, while generally common in the southern reaches of its range, the species remains a subject of interest for its adaptability and its unusual, ground-dwelling behavior that sets it apart from its falcon relatives.
