From Navy SEAL to Governor: The rise and fall of Eric Greitens
In short: How does a Rhodes Scholar and decorated Navy SEAL become a governor and then a political pariah? Eric Greitens' career is a study in high-stakes ambition, marked by elite credentials, military heroism, and a swift collapse triggered by allegations of personal and professional misconduct.
Eric Greitens' trajectory was defined by elite academic and military achievements. A Rhodes Scholar, he earned a doctorate from Oxford University in 2000, focusing on humanitarian efforts in war zones. He transitioned from academia to the front lines as a U.S. Navy SEAL, eventually reaching the rank of lieutenant commander. During his four tours of duty, he commanded units targeting al-Qaeda and was wounded in a 2007 chlorine gas attack in Fallujah, earning him a Purple Heart and a Bronze Star.
His political rise was equally rapid. In 2016, Greitens won the Missouri governorship, becoming the state's first Jewish governor. His tenure was characterized by significant policy moves, including signing a right-to-work law and passing a major steel mill bill that helped restart production lines at Magnitude 7 Metals LLC. However, his campaign was shadowed by controversy, specifically a $1.975 million contribution from a previously unknown Superpac, which led to accusations of "secret fundraising."
The collapse of his governorship came in 2018 following a series of investigations. He faced felony charges of invasion of privacy and computer tampering related to an extramarital relationship and the alleged unauthorized use of a nonprofit donor list for political fundraising. While all criminal charges were eventually dropped in May 2018, the political damage was irreversible. He resigned on June 1, 2018, as impeachment proceedings were considered. Despite a later attempt to return to public office in 2022, he lost the Republican primary for the U.S. Senate.
