In short: Eric Smith has navigated some of the most intense combat zones in recent history, from the streets of Fallujah to the mountains of Afghanistan. Now, as the leader of the U.S. Marine Corps, he is tasked with executing a massive strategic overhaul known as Force Design.

Eric Smith entered the military in 1987, having grown up in Plano, Texas, after being born in Kansas City, Missouri. After graduating from Texas A&M University through the Naval Reserve Officers Training Corps, he served as a rifle platoon commander during Operation Desert Shield/Desert Storm. His early career included deployments for Operation Assured Response in Liberia and a tenure as the Naval Section Chief in Caracas, Venezuela, from 2001 to 2003.

Smith's experience in major conflicts includes multiple deployments to Iraq during Operation Iraqi Freedom, specifically in Fallujah in 2004 and Ramadi in 2005. He also served in Afghanistan during Operation Enduring Freedom. As a general officer, he held high-level commands including the 1st Marine Division, the III Marine Expeditionary Force, and Marine Corps Forces Southern Command, where he was the first dedicated commander at the Miami headquarters.

Since becoming the 39th Commandant of the Marine Corps, Smith has focused on the implementation of Force Design, a strategic reform initiated by his predecessor, General David Berger. His leadership has faced both political and personal challenges; his confirmation was delayed in the Senate by a hold from Senator Tommy Tuberville, and in October 2023, he was hospitalized following a cardiac arrest while jogging near Marine Barracks, Washington, D.C. He returned to his duties on 5 March 2024.

Smith's strategic vision remains centered on Force Design, which he affirmed as the 'strategic priority' of the Corps in his 2025 update. His international engagement includes hosting delegations from allies, such as the Republic of Korea Marine Corps and the Royal Marines, to discuss bilateral cooperation.
