A living relic of the dawn of time survives in secret
In short: The fire salamander is a master of invisibility. This documentary captures rare footage of this nocturnal loner, revealing the high-stakes survival tactics used by its larvae and its enduring presence in German beech forests.
As a relic from the dawn of time, the spotted salamander has survived since the era of dinosaurs. It leads an inconspicuous, solitary life, emerging only after dusk to navigate the German beech forests. While it is a prominent amphibian in the region, its secretive nature makes actual sightings rare.
The footage provides a world-first look at the perilous first weeks of salamander larvae. These early stages are described as a literal race against time—a life-or-death struggle for survival that has never been documented in such compelling detail before.
