The unexpected intelligence and vulnerability of Africa's river giants
In short: In Botswana's Okavango Delta, hippos must navigate a world of extreme shifts, moving from deep floodwaters to parched dust. This film uses rare underwater footage to explore how these sensitive, intelligent animals protect their families against both drought and predators.
The documentary examines the complex life of the hippopotamus, an animal that is highly intelligent, compassionate, and sensitive, despite its dangerous reputation. A central conflict is their total dependence on water; in the Okavango Delta, seasonal floods can vanish into dust within months, forcing hippos to face extreme environmental challenges and enemies alike.
