How the brown pelican survives a high-speed plunge into the ocean

How Do Pelicans Survive Their Death-Defying Dives? | Deep Look · 3:48 · Video: Deep Look · Watch at the source

In short: When a brown pelican hunts, it hits the water at breakneck speeds. To survive the impact and catch prey like anchovies, this bird relies on a specialized biological toolkit evolved over 30 million years, using everything from air sacs to a built-in parachute.

The brown pelican is one of only two pelican species capable of diving from the air to hunt; others, such as the white pelican, simply bob at the surface. This high-velocity hunting method requires managing the intense physical forces encountered when transitioning from air to water. To mitigate this, the bird's bill is shaped to minimize hydrodynamic drag, effectively reducing the buckling forces of impact. This anatomical feature functions much like a karate chop rather than a flat palm strike.

Beyond the bill, the pelican's skeleton is uniquely adapted for impact. While all birds possess light, air-filled bones, the brown pelican takes this to an extreme. During a dive, the bird inflates specific air sacs located around its belly and neck. This mechanism provides a vital cushion against the force of the water and assists the bird in maintaining buoyancy once the dive is complete.

The bird's famous pouch also serves a structural purpose beyond its role as a fishing net. As the pelican enters the water, the beak acts as a parachute that pops open, creating drag to help slow the bird's descent. This complex system of air sacs, specialized bone structure, and bill shape allows the species to thrive. These biological adaptations are part of an evolutionary stasis that has remained largely unchanged for 30 million years.

Despite their impressive 6 to 8 foot wingspan, brown pelicans are relatively small for their kind, weighing an average of 3.5 kg. In the wild, these resilient hunters typically live between 15 and 25 years.
