A $100 million industrial buffer protects a massive carbon bomb

Industrial Savior: Defending Sumatra’s 370,000-Acre Peatland | SLICE EARTH | FULL DOC · 52:24 · Video: SLICE Earth · Watch at the source

In short: Sumatra’s peat forests hold enough underground organic matter to trigger a global catastrophe if ignited. This documentary explores a radical "production-protection" model designed to shield these vital ecosystems from destruction.

The Restorasi Ekosistem Riau (RER) project covers 370,658 acres on Sumatra's Kampar Peninsula. It aims to protect an ecosystem that traps 2.5 gigatons of carbon—an amount exceeding all of Asia's annual transport emissions. Because 90% of the peat forest's organic matter is stored underground, any release via fire would be devastating.

The strategy employs a "buffer ring" of plantations managed by a paper corporation to act as a shield for a pristine core. This industrial model serves as a defense against poachers and catastrophic fires, aiming to preserve 797 different species.
