The paradox of a nation sinking while building a new capital
In short: Indonesia is grappling with an irreversible ecological crisis. This documentary explores the human and environmental cost of rapid industrialization, from toxic plastic pollution in Bali to the massive relocation of the nation's capital.
The film follows activist Daru, who has spent 15 years battling plastic pollution in Bali. Despite a 2019 ban on imports, thousands of tons of plastic waste continue to enter the country illegally from Europe, South Korea, and Canada. This waste is often burned as fuel, releasing black fumes and microplastics into the air and food supply.
The documentary highlights a broader crisis: aggressive resource exploitation is replacing biodiverse forests with mines and factories. While the government is moving the capital to Borneo because Jakarta is sinking, this relocation project is itself causing further deforestation and displacing local communities.
