Jeju Island is home to South Korea’s highest peak and a unique volcanic landscape.
In short: Located 60 miles off the southern tip of the Korean peninsula, Jeju is a special autonomous province defined by its volcanic origins. As the site of Mount Halla, the country’s tallest peak, the island offers a distinct climate and geography that sets it apart from the mainland’s continental patterns.
Geologically, Jeju Island stands out as one of South Korea’s two primary volcanic islands, contrasting with the mainland’s ancient Precambrian granite and gneiss foundations. Its centerpiece, Mount Halla, reaches an elevation of 6,398 feet (1,950 meters), making it the highest point in the entire country. Unlike the mainland, which experiences marked summer-winter temperature extremes driven by the Asian landmass, Jeju benefits from a more temperate maritime influence.
This unique positioning results in a distinct climate profile. While mainland regions face harsh, dry winters and hot, humid summers, Jeju enjoys a longer frost-free season, lasting more than 240 days compared to as few as 170 days in the northern highlands. Precipitation is also notably higher; the southern coast of the island receives over 70 inches (1,800 mm) of rain annually, significantly more than the mainland average of 35 to 60 inches.
The island’s history is as complex as its terrain. Originally the site of the Tamna Kingdom, Jeju was eventually annexed by Goryeo in 1105 and later served as a strategic base for the Mongol Empire in the 13th century. By the Joseon period, it was often relegated to a site for horse breeding and political exile. Today, it operates as a special self-governing province, a status formalized in 2006, reflecting its ongoing evolution from a remote outpost to a vital part of the Republic of Korea.
