North Gyeongsang is the mountainous, industrial heartland that once anchored an ancient Korean kingdom.
In short: As South Korea’s largest province by area, North Gyeongsang is a landscape of extremes. It is the hottest region in the country during summer, a hub for high-tech manufacturing, and the ancestral home of the Silla kingdom. Discover how this province balances deep-rooted cultural heritage with modern industrial ambition.
North Gyeongsang, or Gyeongsangbuk-do, occupies a significant portion of eastern South Korea. Encircled by the rugged Taebaek and Sobaek mountain ranges, the province is geographically distinct and climate-challenged, often recording the highest summer temperatures in the nation. While the Nakdong River and its tributaries carve through the land, the terrain is not defined by broad plains, leading to a specialized agricultural output that includes apples, rice, and beans, alongside coastal marine products from the mainland and Ulleung Island.
Historically, the region served as the cradle of the Silla kingdom, which reigned from 57 bce to 935 ce. This legacy is preserved in a dense concentration of UNESCO World Heritage sites, particularly in and around Gyeongju, the former Silla capital. These sites include the Bulguk Temple, the Seokguram Grotto, and the historic clan villages of Hahoe and Yangdong. The province has long been a wellspring for influential figures, from the Confucian scholar Yi Toegye to modern political and artistic leaders.
In the modern era, North Gyeongsang has transformed into an industrial powerhouse. Cities like Pohang and Gumi drive the economy through the production of iron, steel, machinery, and chemicals. Looking toward the future, the provincial government has initiated plans to position the region as a leader in the domestic metaverse, while simultaneously developing specialized complexes for semiconductor and secondary battery manufacturing. This blend of ancient tradition and cutting-edge technology defines the province's current trajectory.
