In short: Before Jurassic Park became a cinematic landmark, it underwent a turbulent development process. Multiple writers struggled to adapt Michael Crichton’s novel, with scripts shifting from dark, violent narratives to the blockbuster adventure audiences know today. The film’s iconic characters and scenes were forged through years of intense, collaborative revision.

When Steven Spielberg acquired the rights to Michael Crichton’s 1990 novel for $1.5 million in May 1990, the project was far from the finished product. Crichton himself wrote an initial draft, but it was widely disliked for its lack of tension. Subsequent writers, including Malia Scotch Marmo, attempted to overhaul the story. Scotch Marmo spent five months crafting a version that emphasized the theme of nature resisting human control, even suggesting a darker ending where John Hammond drowns in a puddle. Spielberg, however, remained unsatisfied with these early iterations.

The final screenplay was shaped by David Koepp, who joined the project in 1992. Koepp faced the challenge of condensing heavy scientific exposition into digestible sequences, such as the 'Mr. DNA' animation. He worked closely with Spielberg, often rewriting scenes dozens of times—the ice cream dialogue between Hammond and Sattler was revised 27 times. Character dynamics were also fluid; Ian Malcolm was removed and then reinstated after Jeff Goldblum’s casting, while Hammond was reimagined as a Walt Disney-esque figure driven by a desire to entertain.

The production was a masterclass in iterative design. Spielberg, who viewed the film as a land-based successor to Jaws, insisted on keeping the Tyrannosaurus rex hidden to build suspense. The team utilized groundbreaking computer-generated imagery alongside life-sized animatronics to achieve a sense of realism. By the time the film premiered on June 9, 1993, the script had evolved drastically from Crichton’s original vision. Despite the chaotic development, the resulting blockbuster grossed over $914 million worldwide, proving that the long, arduous process of refining the narrative was essential to its enduring cultural impact.
