The elusive kingfisher: capturing the secret life of a forest gem
In short: Experience the life of the kingfisher, a bird often called a flying diamond. This documentary follows a filmmaker's journey to capture the reclusive bird's hunting tactics and family dynamics in the heart of Germany.
Filmmaker Hans-Jürgen Zimmermann spent years pursuing a childhood dream to document the kingfisher near a tributary of the Rhine. The footage provides an intimate look at the bird's survival strategies, including its powerful technique for breaking the water's surface to catch small fish.
The film explores the bird's complex social life, from territorial conflicts in the spring and the construction of breeding hollows to the dangers posed by predators like the sparrow hawk. It also captures the parental behavior of expelling fledglings from the territory.
