The first North American bird to vanish after the Columbian Exchange
In short: The Labrador duck was a ghost of the North Atlantic before it even became a memory. Already rare before European arrival, this enigmatic sea duck vanished in the late 19th century, leaving behind a mystery of ecological niche loss and a tiny collection of museum specimens.
The Labrador duck (Camptorhynchus labradorius) holds a somber distinction in conservation history: it was the first endemic North American bird species to go extinct following the Columbian Exchange. While it was already a rare resident of the coast, its population plummeted between 1850 and 1870. The last confirmed sighting occurred in 1878 in Elmira, New York, with the final preserved specimen shot in 1875 on Long Island.
Biologically, the duck was a mosaic of traits. While its male plumage resembled the eider, its trachea and bony bulla were more similar to the scoter. It was a highly specialized sea duck with an oblong head, beady eyes, and a unique bill. This bill featured a wide, flattened tip with numerous lamellae, allowing it to probe sediment for small molluscs and crustaceans—a specialized diet that made it the ecological counterpart to the North Pacific Steller's eider.
Its extinction remains a complex puzzle. Because it was considered to taste bad and rot quickly, it was not a primary target for hunters. Instead, researchers point to a 'perfect storm' of factors: the overharvesting of its eggs, the feather trade, and a critical decline in its primary food source—mussels and shellfish—due to rapid industrial growth on the Eastern Seaboard. Because it was the only bird whose range was strictly limited to the American coast of the North Atlantic, it lacked the flexibility to flee its disappearing niche.
