Tracing the wild origins of Morocco's most famous street performers

Monkeys & Snakes - In the Wilderness of Morocco | Free Documentary Nature · 51:42 · Video: Free Documentary - Nature · Watch at the source

In short: Beyond the vibrant crowds of Marrakesh's Jemaa el-Fna Square lies a hidden world. This documentary follows two naturalists as they track the elusive animals used in street rituals back to their true habitats.

The film explores the lives of Morocco's last free-roaming Barbary apes, an endangered primate species struggling to survive within the snowy forests of Ifrane National Park. It also ventures into the hot deserts of the Western Sahara, on the border of Algeria and Mauritania, to observe rare and dangerous reptiles, including cobras, Montpellier snakes, and horned desert vipers.

By moving from the Atlas cedars to the southern deserts, the footage reveals the specificities and natural environments of species often seen exhibited for dirhams in the famous Marrakesh square.
