A rare 17-year banquet for the forest's inhabitants
In short: After nearly two decades of silence, a massive insect emergence is about to transform the forest. This video captures the rare spectacle of periodical cicadas returning to the surface for a brief, intense period of activity.
The emergence of periodical cicadas represents the planet's largest insect event. These insects remain underground for 17 years before surfacing for only a few days. This synchronized appearance provides a massive, rare food source for local wildlife, such as turtles, creating a significant seasonal banquet.
