From colonial auxiliary to modern force: the evolution of the Philippine Army
In short: The Philippine Army has transformed from a collection of revolutionary insurgents and colonial scouts into a modern ground warfare branch. With a history spanning over a century, it has navigated global conflicts, internal rebellions, and political upheaval to become the largest component of the nation's armed forces today.
The roots of the Philippine Army trace back to the 1896 revolution against Spanish rule, when the Katipunan formed an insurgent force. This evolved into the Philippine Revolutionary Army in 1897, which the modern military recognizes as its official founding. However, the subsequent Philippine-American War led to the disbanding of these revolutionary units as American forces established control over the archipelago.
During the early 20th century, the military landscape was dominated by the Philippine Scouts and the Constabulary, which served under American authority. It was not until the 1935 National Defense Act that the modern army was formally organized. By 1941, these forces were mobilized under the United States command structure to defend against the Japanese invasion during World War II, leading to significant combat across the islands and the eventual fall of Corregidor in 1942.
The post-war era brought further restructuring, including the separation of the Air Force and Navy from the Army's command. Throughout the late 20th century, the Army became deeply involved in counter-insurgency operations, particularly against Communist groups and the Moro National Liberation Front. These long-running internal conflicts, which intensified during the Marcos dictatorship, necessitated the expansion of the Army's infantry divisions and specialized units.
Today, the Philippine Army operates under the Department of National Defense with an estimated 110,000 personnel. Its current structure includes eleven infantry divisions, an armor division, and various support units. Beyond domestic security, the force has participated in international peacekeeping missions and global conflicts, maintaining a focus on ground operations while modernizing its capabilities for the future.
