How Norway’s Queen Sonja became the first monarch to visit the frozen Antarctic continent
In short: In 2005, Queen Sonja of Norway made history as the first queen to set foot on Antarctica. She traveled to the remote Queen Maud Land to inaugurate a Norwegian research station, marking a unique milestone in a life defined by breaking royal traditions and navigating complex, centuries-old customs.
Born Sonja Haraldsen in 1937, she entered the Norwegian royal family as a commoner, a status that initially sparked significant controversy. Her relationship with Crown Prince Harald remained a secret for nine years. Harald eventually issued an ultimatum to his father, King Olav V, declaring he would never marry if he could not wed Sonja. Since he was the sole heir, this stance threatened the future of the monarchy itself, forcing the King to consult with the government before granting his consent.
Following their 1968 marriage, Sonja became the first queen consort in Norway in 52 years when her husband ascended the throne in 1991. Her tenure was marked by a commitment to public service, including extensive work with the Red Cross and the establishment of various cultural and educational awards. Beyond her official duties, she is a trained graphic artist and ceramicist, reflecting a lifelong interest in the arts that culminated in the opening of the Queen Sonja Art Stable in 2017.
After King Harald V died in August 2026, the Royal Court adopted the title kongemor, or king's mother, for Sonja. This designation, which replaces the modern style of queen consort, has sparked public debate in Norway. Critics and historians note that the term is a departure from recent customs, drawing instead from ancient Viking Age and historical saga traditions to define her new role as the mother of the reigning monarch.
