The Norwegian king who threatened to renounce his throne for love
In short: When Crown Prince Harald of Norway fell for a commoner, the monarchy faced a crisis. His refusal to marry without Sonja Haraldsen nearly changed the course of the Norwegian succession, leading to a romantic standoff that redefined the modern royal family.
The courtship of Sonja Haraldsen was far from a royal fairy tale. In the 1960s, the relationship between the Crown Prince and the commoner sparked significant controversy within the royal household. Harald was so committed to his choice that he reportedly threatened to never marry if the union was blocked. Eventually, his father, King Olav V, granted his consent, and the couple wed on August 29, 1968, after nearly a decade of dating.
Harald’s life was shaped by the turbulence of the 20th century. During the German occupation of Norway in 1940, his family was forced into exile. While his father and the King remained in the country, Harald, his mother Princess Märtha, and his sisters fled to Sweden. This period of displacement was marked by high tension, including a dramatic account of the family nearly being blocked at the Swedish border.
Beyond the palace, Harald was a distinguished athlete and a figure of national stability. An accomplished yachtsman, he competed in the Olympic Games in 1964, 1968, and 1972. During his reign, which began in 1991 and lasted until his death in 2026, he became known as the 'grandfather of the nation.' He earned this title through his steady presence during profound national crises, including the 2011 Norway attacks and the COVID-19 pandemic.
His reign also saw significant shifts in royal law. Although a 1990 amendment established absolute primogeniture—allowing the eldest child to inherit regardless of gender—this change did not apply to his own children. Consequently, his son, Haakon Magnus, became the heir apparent, following the traditional male-preference rules that applied to Harald's generation.
