How do lions survive in the harsh Namib Desert?
In short: Witness a high-stakes health check on a Namibian desert lion. This video explores the survival strategies of these cats and the delicate balance required to manage the conflict between lions and nearby village livestock.
The footage follows a ranger performing a medical assessment on a lion that has been safely darted. This task is complicated by the need to maintain a peaceful relationship with local villagers, whose livestock are frequently threatened by the predators.
The presence of these lions is a biological mystery; after hundreds of them vanished from the Namib Desert in the mid-1980s, the population has unexpectedly returned. Researcher Philip 'Flip' Stander, alongside assistant Lise and the expertise of the San Bushmen, investigates how these magnificent animals endure such an unforgiving landscape of scorched sand dunes.
