The high-stakes somersault of the Australian redback spider
In short: In the shadows of sheds and toilets, a deadly ritual unfolds. To survive a mating attempt with a female redback spider, the male must perform a precise, acrobatic maneuver. He must avoid being mistaken for prey, or he risks being consumed by the female during their high-stakes encounter.
The redback spider (Latrodectus hasselti) is a member of the Theridiidae family, a group found globally. While closely related to the American Black Widow, the redback is distinguished by a prominent red or orange longitudinal stripe on its upper abdomen. Females are typically black or brownish, with a body roughly the size of a large pea, whereas males are smaller, light brown, and possess less distinct markings.
Survival for the male is a matter of extreme physical performance. During the summer mating season, males inhabit the edges of the female's web. To signal his intent and avoid being eaten, the male performs a 'somersault,' presenting his abdomen to the female's mouthparts. This maneuver is so critical that the female may begin secreting digestive juices onto his abdomen even as mating begins. If the male fails to communicate his identity correctly, the encounter can be fatal.
The life cycle of the species is marked by both efficiency and cannibalism. Females can store sperm for up to two years, allowing them to produce up to ten white, round egg sacs, each containing approximately 250 eggs. While females may live for two to three years, males have a much shorter lifespan of about six to seven months. Once spiderlings hatch in two to four weeks, they exhibit cannibalistic behavior, feeding on unhatched eggs and their siblings before dispersing via silk threads caught by air currents.
